Prince William Health System offers the expert staff, services and programs to help you find a more permanent solution to your muscle, joint or back pain. More than a dozen board-certified orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists and back and spine specialists practice at Prince William. Many of the procedures they perform here are minimally invasive, requiring less time in surgery, in the hospital and in recovery.
In 2007, Prince William became the first hospital in Virginia to receive Disease Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Joint Replacements by The Joint Commission. To earn this distinction, our Total Joint Program underwent an extensive on-site evaluation. In June 2009, the hospital was awarded recertification.
In 2010, Prince William was recognized as one of "23 Hospitals with Great Orthopaedic and Spine Programs" by Becker's Orthopaedic & Spine Review, the leading source of business and legal information for hospitals and outpatient surgical centers. Among other hospitals honored were New York-Presbyterian/Columbia and Rush University Medical Center.

Our sports medicine experts offer many lines of treatment to get sports enthusiasts back in the game. Our physical therapy programs help properly rehabilitate an injured area and provide education to prevent future injury. Injections, such as cortisone, are widely used to decrease inflammation and heal injured muscle and tendons. With severe ruptures and tears, sports medicine specialists perform arthroscopic surgery using tiny incisions to repair injuries. This minimally invasive surgical technique results in less tissue damage and a shorter recovery time.
Prince William's Total Joint Program is designed to provide patients with a speedy recovery and the best possible outcome after joint replacement surgery. The success of our program can be attributed to the amount of education, quality of care and planning we provide to get you up and moving fast.
- Educational Seminars. The program offers a free, two-hour class once a month to educate patients about the joint replacement process. Professionals from each phase of treatment are there to answer your concerns. Patients who take the class almost always experience better outcomes.
- Day One - The Surgery. Patients are normally admitted to the Orthopaedics Unit the morning of their joint replacement surgery. Each patient is placed in an all-private room. After surgery, our therapists get them up and moving that afternoon, depending on their condition.
- Day Two - Therapy. The next day, patients receive a series of therapy sessions geared toward restoring their mobility and ability to perform everyday tasks. Patients are visited by both a physical therapist and occupational therapist.
- Day Three - Release. Physical therapy continues with special attention to everyday tasks, such as climbing stairs. Patients meet with their case manager to assess their home needs and normally leave the hospital by the afternoon.
Total joint patients are treated by a dedicated team who carefully plan out each aspect of care. The team meets regularly to discuss the latest evidence-based order sets the best ways of providing care documented by research. Our compliance with these guidelines has consistently won Prince William important certifications from The Joint Commission.
